As an innovator in the field of car safety, German auto maker Mercedes Benz was practically forced to expand the technology it currently features in some of its high end models.
Starting in the near future, probably with the next generation, the A- and B-Klasse models will receive their own enhanced collision avoidance systems. These new features include an upgraded version of the radar-based collision warning with adaptive Brake Assist.
The decision made by the German auto maker to expand the use of these type of features comes not only from the need to offer the same degree of safety on all of its models, but also as a result of the studies which proved the worth of the systems.
Currently, some 22 percent of accidents involving injury or fatalities occur as a result of rear-end collisions (the type of accident the collision warning system was developed in mind with) in Germany, with that percentage going to as high as 31 percent in the US.
The additional DISTRONIC PLUS and BAS PLUS (proximity control systems) can also assist the drivers into making the right decisions at the right time. According to Mercedes, the need for these features is obvious because out of the total number of customers opting for them, at least 41 percent benefited and needed at the same time their intervention.
"Fine coordination of these systems requires comprehensive know-how, and is decisive for customer acceptance and effectiveness. Systems are only accepted if they work reliably, and are only seldom operated or triggered in error."
