McLaren is getting ready to launch a brand new hypercar that will pick up the mantle of the legendary F1. But just like the Aventador is winding down the power battle and focuses on handling, so too is the British firm.
Drive magazine reports that McLaren Automotive boss Ron Dennis has not put the main focus on top speed. The original F1 or the Bugatti Veyron might be bedroom wall kings due to their speed, but they aren’t perfect driver’s cars.

Production will be limited to somewhere between 300 and 500 units. The car will make its big debut at the 2012 Monaco Grand Prix in May.

From previous reports, we know that the car will be known as the P12 and will be uch more aggressive styling than the MP4-12C, sporting a double-bubble roof and a canopy-like greenhouse. Power will come from a 3.8-liter twin-turbo engine that will now put out 800 bhp.

“[The MP4-12C] will go around any circuit in the world faster than an F1,” Dennis says. “Don’t get fixated by top speed. That’s the first thing you have to discard in today’s society.”

“What you’ve got to have is a complete package of performance,” he adds. “You’ve got to embrace technologies that are out there that are accepted, and some that don’t even exist. I can tell you our next car has many things on it that don’t exist at the moment.”

He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
