Massa Pins 2011 Hopes on Pirelli Tires

After back-to-back failed campaigns in 2009 and 2010, Felipe Massa cannot afford another disappointing campaign in Formula One. And the Brazilian driver knows that all too well, as he will try to improve on his last year's performance and score his first win for the Scuderia since the 2008 Brazilian Grand Prix.

In order to do that, he needs a car that can match his driving style, and that's exactly what he expects of the 2011 Ferrari challenger. The 29-year old racer insisted that his past struggles with the Prancing Horse were related to the low-grip Bridgestone front tires, a problem which new tire supplier Pirelli seems to have solved.

Following his first test on Pirelli rubber in Abu Dhabi, Massa had stated his belief that the new compound would help him regain his track form and help him improve. Now, at the end of Ferrari's Wrooom media event in the Italian Dolomites, he piggybacked on that statement, admitting that his 2011 hopes are now resting on his new relationship with the Pirelli tires.

My first contact (with Pirelli) was very positive,” said Massa, according to Brazil's O Estado de S.Paulo. “I found the car easier to drive with the front tires having more grip; I could go into the corners in the way I like to drive.”

The change in tire grip was confirmed by his teammate Fernando Alonso also, who avoided making any predictions for the new season. However, he did point out that he will have to adapt his driving style to the characteristics of the Pirelli compound.

We will know more at the next test in Valencia, which will be very interesting. My style of driving will definitely have a little change (for 2011),” said Alonso.
