Massa Handed 20-Second Penalty in Canadian Grand Prix

Felipe Massa had a race to forget last weekend, as he struggled throughout the Canadian Grand Prix to eventually finish on a disappointing 15th place. And as if that weren't enough, the Brazilian found out after the race that he received a 20-second penalty for speeding during his last pit stop.

Despite a horrible first part of the race, Massa was in contention for 9th place overall in the late stages of the Sunday action, when catching up with Mercedes GP's Michael Schumacher. While clearly faster than the German driver, the Ferrari-an attempted to pass him at the end of the long straight leading to the pit lane, but Schumacher's late braking saw the two cars make contact.

While Schumacher was able to resume his race, Massa had to make an extra pit stop for a new front wing, eventually re-entering the track in 15th place. However, during that last pit stop, the Ferrari-an broke the speed limit, leading to an extra 20 seconds on his overall race time. However, that did little to affect his already poor classification, as 16th placed Heikki Kovalainen was more than a lap behind him.

Soon after the incident between those two drivers, it was confirmed that the FIA racing stewards would investigate the matter. After the race however, following some thorough discussions with both drivers, it was decided that Schumacher wasn't to blame for the collision.

Despite escaping the penalty after that incident, Schumacher was not all content with how things progressed at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve last Sunday, as a late incident with Force India's Vitantonio Liuzzi threw him outside the point-scoring positions in the very last lap. The Italian driver tried to pass the German and the two made slight contact a couple of times, before Liuzzi finally passed the 7-time world champion.

A few seconds later, Liuzzi's teammate Adrian Sutil also took advantage of Schumacher's struggling pace and passed him for 10th place.
