Maruti Suzuki in India has announced that it is celebrating the one million units production milestone (2010 vehicle production), as its two plants at Manesar and Guargon have already exceeded this output figure.
Suzuki debuted the car production in India in December 1983 and the company reached an annual output capacity of 50,000 units two years later. The carmaker’s annual production capacity had grown to 100,000 units by 1998.
2004 saw the company reach the 500,000 vehicles per year production level. Now, a new Suzuki is born in India every 16 seconds, as the company has a workforce of 7,500 people. A total of 8.8 million vehicles have rolled off the Maruti Suzuki production lines since 1983.
“The one million units annual milestone places India on a similar output to that of the Japanese plants, underlining the importance and major contribution from Maruti Suzuki to the corporations global production of 2.35 million units in the fiscal year 2009,” stated the press release.
Suzuki has a 54 percent market share in India (the figure refers to the passenger cars segment of the market). The company reaches its customers through a 847-point dealer network, which offers 1,800 service and repair sites in 1,215 cities and towns. Some of the larger dealers use 50 bay workshops, servicing up to 250 cars per day.
Maruti Suzuki also offers a driving school service, which uses international service quality standards, offering participants theoretical, simulator and road lessons. This project is important as India’s crowded traffic poses a real threat to novice drivers, who face an increased accident risk.
