Mihai Marinescu has secured his presence in the F2 championship for the second year running, after receiving backing from the Romanian Tourism Department, the City of Brasov and KG Clean Energy.
The 22-year old Romanian driver made his debut in the series last year, after an encouraging season in the Formula Renault 3.5, and finished the 2010 campaign on a respectable 11th place, highlighting a 4th place finish at Portimao. Point finishes at Silverstone, Monza, Zolder, Brands Hatch, Oschersleben and Valencia totaled to 68 points at the end of the season.
With this announcement, Marinescu become the 21st driver confirmed for this year's F2 championship, as he will make the grid from the very season opening round at Silverstone, this weekend.
“Last year was really good and I'll be putting that experience into good use this time,” said Marinescu in a statement released by the F2 Series' website. “Silverstone testing went well and I feel confident with the track, so it's a great opportunity for the podium. In the championship I want to finish in the top three but I have my eyes on the Williams F1 test.”
“It's really great to have Mihai back for 2011,” added F2 series boss Jonathan Palmer. “He showed great promise last year and given his impressive run in pre-season testing I'm sure he will be a strong contender for podiums, and maybe even race wins, starting from Silverstone this weekend.”
In the latest F2 tests at Snetterton, on March 30, Marinescu ended the day 8th overall, a little over 1.1 seconds behind Miki Monras.
