Mahindra Thar CRDe Launched

Mahindra recently debuted the company's latest SUV, the so-called Thar CRDe, in New Delhi, with the rest of the country scheduled to receive the vehicle in the first month of next year. Although it's being called a life style vehicle, the Thar CRDe is only powered by a 2.5-liter diesel engine that generates just 105 horsepower and 247 Nm of torque.

The engine is mated to a five-speed manual transmission and, thanks to a BorgWarner manual shift transfer case, it's able to do wonders in off-road environments. And because we're talking about off-roading, the car has an approach angle of 46 degree and a departure angle of 30 degree with 200mm (7 inches) ground clearance. Standard features include air-conditioning, power steering, independent front suspension, as well as stabilizer bars that guarantee limitless off-roading.

"Having realized the potential of this emerging segment of off-road enthusiasts and lifestyle seekers, we have launched the Thar. The Thar is an extension of our legacy and what Mahindra stands for. Popular amongst generations of off-road enthusiasts, style seekers and even war-veterans, not many vehicles share the same legendary past and iconic status of the Mahindra Thar," M&M’s Chief executive, Rajesh Jejurikar, said in a statement.

And Mahindra doesn't stop here. The company confirmed it is working on several other projects and new models are likely to be presented in the second half of 2011.

“We are working on a lot of models. There will be a pick up on a completely new platform,” said Arun Malhotra, senior vice-president (sales and customer care, Mahindra & Mahindra), according to livemint.com. “We plan to bring it in the second of 2011. It will be positioned near the top-end of our commercial vehicle pickup range, with a payload capability of above 1 tonne.”
