Liuzzi Hopes for F1 Return in 2010

Vitantonio Liuzzi has unfinished business in Formula 1 and plans to make his return in the series from as early as next year. Currently test and reserve driver for Force India, the Italian is trustful that he will be given the chance to actually compete for Vihay Mallya's team in 2010, as the contracts of both Giancarlo Fisichella and Adrian Sutil expire at the end of 2009.

Liuzzi had previously contested for Red Bull Racing (2005) and Scuderia Toro Rosso (2006-2007) in Formula One, having scored only 5 points in 3 years. At the end of 2007, unable to extend his deal with the Faenza based team, he took on a testing/reserve role with Force India, which he currently holds until 2011.

With a significant amount of pressure on both Fisichella and Sutil to perform well this season and neither of them scoring any points in the first 3 rounds, there is a good possibility one of them might leave the team at the end of 2009. And Liuzzi expects Mallya to turn to him when deciding on the 2010 lineup.

I'm very confident about it, there are good chances for me to get back to racing in F1 with Force India. I have a contract until 2011, while Fisichella and Sutil's contracts expire at the end of the year,” said the Italian driver in an interview for Autosprint magazine.

Liuzzi is currently running in the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport. Due to the in-season testing ban imposed by the FIA for the 2009 F1 season, Liuzzi was forced to look elsewhere for a racing spot, while still under contract with Force India.

The A1GP programme comes from a decision taken together with Force India, in order to keep me trained since in F1 a third driver doesn't have the chance to test anymore. We had also considered GP2, but it wasn't possible. A1GP is fine for my aims because it's very competitive, it requires good physical preparation and it also includes pit stops. These are all valid elements to keep me ready for a return to F1 in 2010,” added Liuzzi.
