Oh, the crazy things rich people do. Lawrence Whittaker, the CEO of Lister Cars has put his $345,000 (new) Bentley Mulsanne up for sale on E-Bay, and there is no reserve on the bidding.
If you're having a hard time understanding his decision, join the club. Mr. Whittaker says the reason he wants to part with the Mulsanne is that he doesn't get to use it often enough, but that still doesn't explain the 99 cents initial price. Maybe he's just doing an experiment, trying to see how high people will bid for a luxury car when they know they could theoretically have it for as low as one dollar.
Right now, the bid sits at $29 (23,556 British pounds) with 30 bids made, but there are still nine days left. The price is likely to go a lot higher in the closing stages, but if we were to make an assumption, we'd be surprised if most people will be willing to pay over $150,000 for that car. It's not that it's not worth more, but people tend to set psychological thresholds for themselves, and that one seems like the most likely plateau. However, those who really want a Mulsanne might actually bid even higher.
But what exactly is it they're fighting for? Well, Mr. Whittaker says he bought the Bentley in 2012 to use it for official company events, but over the past four years, it failed to clock more than 26,500 miles. The car has been kept in a garage and never driven in the rain (didn't know that was a thing. It also explains the low mileage, considering it was used in the UK).

As you can see my Bentley has always been very well cared for. She is always garaged and NEVER used in the rain (I have Range Rover for when it pours), in fact the reason I am selling is because I don't use this car enough! I am somewhat of a car fanatic and bought this to use for official company events, however it simply does not get used enough by me. This Mulsanne has a very high spec with a list price in the region of £280,000 when new. Of course the range of standard equipment is long, but from memory the optional extras are: Upgraded Alloy Wheels, Front Heated/Cooled Massage Seats, Rear Seat Entertainment Pack (TV’s in rear) with Heated/Cooled Massage Seats, Full Electric side and rear blinds, Hand Stitched Bentley Flying B’s in the Seats, Extra wood on the dashboard, Bright Stainless Door Finishers, iPod drawer, TV etc etc. Of course it has all the normal stuff like Sat Nav and Climate Control as you would expect. You will not believe how well this car drives, there are absolutely no rattles or noises and it honestly drives like a brand new Bentley. Exterior:
The body work on this car is truly immaculate, as you can imagine for the mileage. There are hardly any stone chips at all and if there is one or two they are tiny. It has good tyres all round and all 4 alloy wheels have recently been fully refurbished at a cost of £400 per wheel to their original Diamond specification. You are more than welcome to come and view to see for yourself before bidding. As with all my cars, she has been valeted regularly and never been allowed to sit when dirty. Not much else I can say - see the photos.
Interior:
The leather interior in this car is truly in pristine condition with no scratches, or those nasty wear patches that you sometimes see. The seats are finished in light cream leather, but the roof lining is light so you don't get that hemmed in feeling.. All the buttons work including the heated massage seats (very useful and a necessity I find). Again, this is a very high specification car that cost over £280,000 when new and has almost every option that could be fitted including the full rear seat package that is amazing! The burr walnut is all in perfect condition. There really isn't much to say about the interior - it is all so immaculate and indistinguishable over a new car.
There is a FULL SERVICE HISTORY with this car, and the last service is now due and I WILL HAVE THIS DONE before the buyer collects! The engine runs very sweetly indeed, as does the auto gearbox. Mechanically this car has wanted for nothing and drives superbly. There is an extended Warrantywise warranty included in the sale that lasts for 12 months so you’ll have worry free motoring. The warranty even works at the Bentley main agent!
Of course I have all the original manuals, books and have the original 2 sets of keys.
Conclusion:
If you are looking for an immaculate Bentley Mulsanne that stops traffic wherever it goes that has been absolutely cherished then this is the one for you. The 6.8 litre V8 is the best engine, its sounds awesome and is fairly economical for such a large car getting 22mpg on a run or more if you're a careful driver. There are lots of examples out there that have not been looked after as they should, but this one is in truly immaculate condition, which you can hopefully see from the photos.
I will be very sad to see this car go… This is really a superb example that can only be described as pristine condition throughout - seeing is believing! The best bit is that since they haven’t made that many Mulsanne’s compared to say Phantom’s you won’t get hit with any nasty depreciation (its already happened - I know). You are more than welcome to come and view before the auction and inspections are of course welcome. By the way she is HPI clear and has never been in an accident!! I have throughly enjoyed owning this car for the last few years, but unfortunately I need the garage space now.
