LG is a brand best known for its wide range of home electronics, from laptops to televisions and computer monitors, but at this year's Consumer Electronics Show, the company surprised the audience with a couple of futuristic automotive-related products, including a new mobility concept called the LG Alph-able and a refined version of their Bon Voyage camping trailer.
Touted as a "personalized digital cave," the Alpha-able EV concept represents LG's mobility vision for the future. It boasts an ultra-modern stance with a sleek, aerodynamic design and an interior decked out in LG OLED displays and appliances. The company endowed it with advanced autonomous driving capabilities, meaning it is designed for a future where cars seamlessly navigate through traffic without human intervention.

Built around three themes - Transformable, Explorable, and Relaxable - the Alpha-able also aims to deliver a unique customer experience through innovative solutions that can turn the vehicle into "a restaurant to dine, an office to work in, or even a movie theatre-on-wheels."

To offer passengers this "transformable” and "relaxable” experience, LG equipped the concept with cutting-edge display technologies, including transparent, flexible, and rollable displays, swiveling seats to turn the cabin into a lounge, as well as home appliance technologies and solutions such as a mini-fridge under the hood and a sparkling wine holder in the trunk you can summon with the push of a button.

Artificial intelligence, such as voice assistants, will help realize the Explorable side of the experience by understanding "the unique context of each journey, factoring in a travel destination, travel duration, and other variables" and delivering tailored information and content for each separate situation.

The other automotive-related product introduced by LG at CES 2024 is a smaller, refined version of their Bon Voyage camper trailer. Designed by the LG Labs division, the original Bon Voyage was unveiled last year as a dual-axle duplex tiny home-style rig for outdoor adventures. It was larger and featured a full-height glass wall.

The upgraded version of the camper now measures 12.4 feet (3.8 meters) long, 6.6 feet (2 meters) wide, and 7.2 feet (2.2 meters) tall and takes creature comforts to a whole new level. Sized like a teardrop, the new Bon Voyage has a boxy design with a flat roofline, a tailgate entryway, as well as a full side door.

The company describes it as a customized living space that brings home-quality living into the great outdoors. The interior space is designed to be equipped with a comfortable bed as well as camper-style equipment, including a refrigerator, an electric stove, and a water purifier. An LG Styler, which is essentially a clothes sanitizer, and a shoe cleaning kit are also fitted inside.

The full-height opening at the rear has both a lift-gate and drop-down tailgate and reveals some storage cubbies under the mattress that can hold various kitchen utensils and food prep equipment. The tailgate can also serve as a worktop. The rendering revealed by LG shows these cubbies being used as a wine bar.

Maybe that's because one side of the trailer has a slide-out work surface with an integrated induction hob and several drawers for kitchen essentials. The other side houses an external OLED TV neatly tucked away behind a panel that folds down to become a table. An outdoor beer fridge, a karaoke machine, and a luggage rack up front are also part of the design.

Thanks to its compact size, Bon Voyage can easily be towed by both small and large vehicles, and the large glass window on the lift gate ensures campers will enjoy fantastic views of their natural surroundings.

Since the Bon Voyage product comes from LG Labs, which LG describes as a marketing division focused on experimental products and services, don't expect the comping trailer to enter production anytime soon. However, it's a great proof of concept that previews what glamping would be like in the future.
