Just because the competition got upgraded tech in their hybrids doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to keep up and switch to it as soon as possible.
Lexus pioneered hybrids in the luxury segment so it knows ‘a thing or two’ about them and it seems that what they got now suffices and considers that the actual nickel metal batteries found in their vehicles (RX 450h, ES 300h, GS 450h, LS 600h and CT 200h) is good enough to skip the newly developed upgraded lithium-ion ones of the competition.
Lexus Vice President Mark Templin believes that a new generation of high efficiency batteries will come out by 2020, a short time comparing to the actual hybrid car’s lifetime. Considering this, Mark says that there is no point investing money into current lithium-ion only to make another big change a couple of years later.
The new lithium-ion batteries that rival hybrid luxury vehicles are now using are lighter and more powerful than Lexus’, but come at a bigger price, which kind of interferes with the Japanese automaker’s plan right now.
