Getting in the holiday spirit wasn't hard at all for Lexus, as the Japanese automaker has a new red color they say is even brighter than Rudolph's nose.
Firmly shaking up the belief that Lexus cars are dull and boring the striking new RC Coupe supposedly comes with a deep red tone that's achieved using four base coats of paint which are then baked twice. We've yet to see this shade in person, so we'll leave it up to the Lexus officials to explain: "Layers of colored and clear coating are used to control some of the color’s reflections and establish a balance between the brightness and depth – two elements that traditionally work against each other."
To get this finish, every RC body will be first coated in silver, then covered in transparent clear coat, then a translucent red coat, which is then topped with another clear coat. Everything is then baked twice to harden.
Lexus says that by doing this, the light reflects both off the red color and the silver below. It sounds like a bit of clever marketing, but then again a lot of German cars lack a good shade of bright red that matches their personality.
Making its North American debut at the Detroit Auto Show, the Lexus RC is sure to draw everybody's attention, but only time will tell if it's for the right reasons.
