Lexus Premium Compact Concept Teaser Released

Toyota's luxury division Lexus released yesterday the first teaser showing their star at the upcoming Frankfurt Auto Show next month. Dubbed, so far, Premium Compact, the concept will use a combination of "technical innovation and ground-breaking design that promises to raise the bar in the premium compact segment,” as the company said in a release.

As for the technical aspects of the concept, little is know at this point. The Compact will be an entry-level model for Lexus, and it will most likely not be sold in the US. According to the source, Lexus also plans a hybrid powertrain for the Compact, probably the same as the one used on the HS 250h sedan. This unit uses a 2.4l four cylinder Atkinson gasoline engine developing 147 hp, paired with a 40 hp electric motor.

According to some reports surfacing prior to the release of the teaser, the new hatchback will use a front-wheel drive Toyota Corolla chassis and will use some of the technologies featured on the Auris.

The similarities between the technologies borrowed from the Auris to be used in the new Lexus also point to a possible employment of the future hybrid Auris powertrain, scheduled to enter the European market towards the middle of 2010.

"This image is the first official sketch of the new Lexus Concept, which will demonstrate a mix of technical innovation and ground-breaking design.
The new concept is targeted for the premium compact segment,
" Lexus said in a release, adding that the full specifications for the new concept will be announced next month in Frankfurt.

As for the release date of the production model, Lexus will debut the Compact at the Geneva Auto Show next year, prior to the release for the market sometimes in mid-2010.
