It goes without saying, but being a celebrity gets you in the way of some very nice and occasionally rather surprising perks. The bigger the celebrity, the bigger the perks.
Leonardo DiCaprio, dubbed by trade publications as one of the last movie stars left in Hollywood because of his obsession with privacy and his reluctance to talk about himself with the press, is as big a celebrity as they come. So he gets the biggest perks possible, including the use of a diplomatic car while on personal business in London, UK – not because he's a diplomat, but because he can.
Writers and actors are still on strike in Hollywood, so DiCaprio is enjoying this unexpected extended vacation.
He recently stopped in London for a few fashion-related events and parties because, if you're to believe an old meme, wherever there are models, Leo is not far behind. If you missed his London stay, that's because he’s been able to go completely under the radar, which, as per a new report, was partly due to his use of a diplomatic vehicle.
The vehicle was a loaner from "an Ivory Coast diplomat," says one British tabloid. It was a bright blue $100,000 Range Rover with blacked-out windows and the special license plate that marks it as a diplomatic vehicle. As one unnamed source says, this proves that DiCaprio is very well-connected, perhaps even more so than we ever knew.
The advantages of riding in a diplomatic vehicle for the actor include the ability to run a red light or dart through traffic while ignoring the legal limit to avoid the paparazzi or too enthusiastic fans. If you think the Beatles had it rough with their screaming fans throwing themselves at them, it's probably worse for a star like DiCaprio on account of the tech we have today, allowing word of his whereabouts to spread on social media almost in real life.
For the record, diplomatic vehicles are still bound by UK law, but they tend to skirt it without issue when the situation calls it. Drivers have diplomatic immunity, so police officers hardly ever bother about a minor traffic violation.
"[DiCaprio] even had it drop him off and pick him up at Chiltern Firehouse, where he likes to hang out in the capital," says the spy. Chiltern Firehouse is a very popular celebrity-magnet restaurant in London, in case you were wondering.
DiCaprio has a new movie coming out this year if the strike ends by then. Killers of the Flower Moon is yet another collaboration with Martin Scorsese and also stars Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, and Jesse Plemons. It opened to rave reviews at film festivals and will probably be a box-office success.
But until that happens, DiCaprio has some time to kill.
