Leo Motors Concludes First Mountain BMS Test

South Korean electric vehicles and components manufacturer Leo Motors announced this week it has concluded the first tests of an e-truck equipped with the high precision Battery Management System (BMS) and Leo's 30kW power train system.

The test has been carried out on the Nogodan mountain in Korea and consisted of the truck pulling a 770-pound payload up the 27 percent grade of the mountain. The test was span for 8.2 miles at an average speed of 30 miles/hour.

“This event has a great significance in Korea, because the conversion law for electric vehicles (EVs) was announced today,” Robert Kang, Leo Motors CEO said in a statement. “Leo Motors wants to be a pioneer in the EV conversion market as we plan to mass-produce various powers of electric power trains within the year.”

Last week, Leo Motors announced it is working on a new BMS, one which can charge at a current of up to 4 times the rated capacity of the battery per hour (4C), hence reducing the time required to fully recharge a battery.

The new BMS, some 70 percent smaller than existing units, allows the battery pack to become fully charged in about 15 minutes using a quick charging mode. Plans for an even quicker, 5 minutes charging BMS are also being drafted by Leo Motors.

The manufacturer has also developed 3kW to 240kW electric power trains, which have already been tested on EVs. There is no word however when the systems will be implemented on real life vehicles, be it manufactured by Leo Motors or by other carmaker.
