Land Rover And Defender to go Separate Ways

It looks that the future is not bright for the Land Rover Defender, one of the most iconic off-road vehicles in the world. When looking at the Defender we are tempted to imagine it on a wild lion safari chase. But it seems that itwill not chase lions anymore, given the fact that Land Rover is considering putting it to pasture. It is a certain fact that the manufacturer considers to stop production of the iconic 4X4. One of the main reasons was the huge responsibility that came along with designing a new model, which was a bit challenging, given the fact that it might not be as good as the previous one.

“If we get it wrong we are messing up one of the industry’s biggest icons, and in that sense it’s a tremendous responsibility.” Colin Green UK Land Rover Managing Director was quoted as saying by autoexpress.co.uk.

The model saw the road for the first time in 1947, and it was car popular with farmers, rescue services and utility companies. The main problem, as explained by Colin Green, was how to keep its legendary pedigree but also expand its design in order to attract new customers. There was an option considered but it involved using the same platform as the Discovery and the Range Rover Sport. The idea was shortly dropped, given the fact that it would make it too expensive compared to the present one.

“Another option is to carry on the current model using Euro VI engines. A third is that we abandon that section of the market. It’s our least preferred choice because we have serviced that customer base for a long time, but there’s no point in servicing the customer and not the business. We have to make money and all three options are on the table,”
Colin Green was quoted as saying by the aforementioned source.
