There was a time when Lamborghini produced a single model for years on end. Remember the Diablo? When the Volkswagen Group entered the scene, the House of the Raging Bull expanded its lineup with the hugely successful Gallardo. Quite a long time later, the automaker from Sant'Agata Bolognese welcomed its first SUV since the LM002 in the form of the Urus.
Come 2028, the Italian automaker intends to start production of an electric vehicle with over a megawatt (1,341 ponies) from two electric motors. Rather than a Revuelto-inspired supercar, the concept which previews the series-production model is a utility vehicle posing as a grand tourer. A three-door affair, the Lanzador may also work perfectly fine as a liftback sedan.

Penned by Siim Parn of Estonia, a.k.a. spdesignsest on Instagram, the liftback design study was inspired by a rather old concept. Revealed at the 2008 Salon d'Automobiles in Paris, the Lamborghini Estoque is – in essence – a modern take on the two-door Espada. The four-door Estoque, however, features a trunk lid rather than a rear hatch, making it more elegant than the Lanzador.

Powered by the 5.2-liter V10 of the Gallardo, the Estoque may have entered production had it not been for the global financial crisis that wreaked havoc for everyone. In the United States, for example, both General Motors and Chrysler had to be bailed out with taxpayer money in order to save many, many jobs.

Turning out attention back to the Lanzador, why didn't Lamborghini design it closer to Siim Parn's vision? The answer comes in two parts. First and foremost, Porsche already has an electric high-performance sedan in the form of the Taycan. But more importantly, the Raging Bull sells more SUVs than supercars nowadays. That's where the money is at, and certain peeps aren't exactly fine with this reality.

The truth is, the Urus allowed Lamborghini to develop a bespoke platform for the Revuelto. Said platform is expected to be adapted for the Huracan's plug-in hybrid successor, which is getting a twin-turbo V8 to the detriment of the naturally-aspirated V10 we all know and love. The Urus also happens to be the most practical vehicle in the automaker's lineup, with said practicality bringing a lot of new customers that would have otherwise purchased a Bentayga or a Cayenne.

There is nothing particularly wrong with the Lanzador being a 2+2 grand tourer moonlighting as a sport utility vehicle or vice versa. In fact, it's very bold to see a true coupe SUV rather than a bugbear like the X6. Better still, Ferrari doesn't have anything to compete with it.

On the other hand, remember that the Purosangue is the fastest and most dynamically accomplished SUV in production. It's also the only sport utility vehicle out there with a naturally-aspirated V12, an engine that can trace its roots back to the Enzo's 6.0-liter screamer.
