Kubica Takes R31 to the Top in Valencia Despite Problems

The first group test of the winter, in Valencia, ended with a surprising car on top of the timing reports. After 3 days of lapping the Ricardo Tormo circuit, it was Renault that saw its highly-innovative R31 emerge as the car to beat, with Robert Kubica finishing the Thursday running with the best time of the week.

His time yesterday (1:13.144) was 0.2 seconds faster than what Fernando Alonso could manage in his Ferrari F150 a day before, and almost 8 tenths quicker than Mark Webber's lap time on Thursday, at the wheel of the new Red Bull RB7.

Nevertheless, it wasn't all good for Renault and Kubica yesterday, as the Pole could only some track time with his R31 at around 13:30 local time, due to some electrical problems. Once everything was taken care of, he quickly got up to speed and managed to top the field in great fashion.

Asked about his first feel of the R31, Kubica continued to play the precaution card and insisted that it's too early to evaluate anything after only 3 days of testing. In addition, despite having finished on top of the classification, he admitted mileage was much more important this week than scoring the best time.

You could split the day in two parts,” said Kubica after the Thursday session. “It would be difficult to call it positive because the first real run we managed only to do it at 13:30. So after we solved our problems with the car we managed to do a bit of evaluation on set-up and some tyre work. But because of the morning we were unable to complete our programme and we didn't do the laps we targeted.”

It's impossible to compare the feeling to last year's car but the feeling can depend a lot on how things will look when everybody is in the same condition and everybody is running on the same time. We have to keep working and pushing and try to solve the problems we have in Valencia.”
