Kubica Not Crazy for Doing Rally - Alonso

Fernando Alonso once again defended Robert Kubica's decision to rally in his spare time, even though this decision ultimately got him into the hospital and deprived him of a potential title-chasing campaign in 2011.

Kubica injured his right hand in a rally accident in Italy in early February and has ever since undergone 4 surgeries at the Santa Corona hospital in Pietra Ligure. In the accident, he injured his right hand, elbow, humerus and leg, and according to current estimates it is yet to be seen if the Pole will ever regain full functionality of his fingers.

While criticized by many for his “crazy” outing in rallying – although it was done in his spare time – Kubica was backed by his good friend Alonso, who insisted the Renault driver didn't risk anything going into the rally.

A rally with an approved car, a helmet and a seat belt is not crazy,” insisted the Spanish driver, who last month told the media that race drivers tackle danger every time they step into a car.

As for Kubica's medical condition a month and a half after the accident, Alonso said he is convinced the Pole will do anything in his power to recover from his injuries and make a quick return to the sport.

I am absolutely sure (Kubica will recover) and he will do everything to make it happen as quickly as possible,” said Alonso in an interview with Italy's Corriere della Sera. “I know he will want to do that, just as I would – I would do everything to get back into a race car again.”
