Kubica Found Out about BMW Quit on the Internet

With BMW out of the picture next year, it's plenty of room for speculation regarding the future of both Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica. The two drivers are currently without a contract for next year and will be sort of “free agents” for 2010, with plenty of teams looking to sign one of them as soon as possible.

However, going back to what happened earlier this month, when the German manufacturer first announced its decision to withdraw from the sport, there are still plenty of stories to tell. For example, the way each driver found out about their team's decision. After all, their Formula One future was on the line, so the Hinwil based team was supposed to at least think about them before making the call to pull the plug on their F1 opeartions.

Well guess again, as neither of the two drivers were told of BMW's decision before it was announced. While Heidfeld had the “luxury” of finding out from the team's press officer Heike Hientzsch, Polish driver Robert Kubica learned about it on the Internet.

I woke up in the morning, did some running, opened the Internet and then saw it,” Kubica was quoted as saying to the Spanish media on Thursday. “Then I received an email with the decision,” he added.

The Pole insisted though that he's not angry with his team for not giving him some prior notice to that decision, as he reckoned he's not such a big part of BMW Sauber anyway. We'd argue against that, however, considering that plenty of teams are already battling through to get his signature for 2010. According to recent reports, Kubica is close to inking a deal with Renault, where he might replace Fernando Alonso.

I'm just a small piece of this paddock. One small tool of the team. I'm confident to find the right place to be next year. It's difficult to know which team it will be,”added the 24-year old driver.
