Kubica Eyeing Ferrari Move in 2011

Robert Kubica might have signed with Renault for the upcoming season of Formula One, but the Polish driver is still linked with a move to Ferrari in the near future. The fact that the Pole signed only a one-year deal with the Enstone based team caused plenty of speculation by the media, and most of it was related to the Maranello team.

According to Spanish newspaper AS, Kubica's deal with Renault only guarantees the Pole a single year at Enstone. Apparently, this was the driver's wish also, as one spare racing spot is likely to be freed at Ferrari prior to the 2010 F1 season.

Felipe Massa's deal with the Scuderia is to run out at the end of the 2010 season, and Ferrari is yet to pick an extension option to his contract. In addition, his injury in the Hungarian Grand Prix – which sidelined him for the remainder of the 2009 season – might affect his performances next season. If that was to happen, Kubica wanted to keep his options open for 2011.

Robert Kubica and Fernando Alonso – confirmed by Ferrari last week for the upcoming 3 F1 seasons – are known to be best friends inside the paddock, as the Spaniard recently put in a good word for his “poker rival” at Renault. Also, in a poll submitted by Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport earlier this year, the two drivers were top of the list in the tifosi's preferences for a Ferrari lineup.

Asked about the possibility of taking over Felipe Massa's seat at Ferrari from 2011 onwards – during last weekend's Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka – Kubica obviously denied the rumors.

That's the first time I have heard that,” said the Polish driver.
