Korean GP Organizers Admit Circuit Not Ready

Although it has recently received the go-ahead from the International Automobile Federation (FIA) to host the upcoming Korean Grand Prix, the Yeongam venue is apparently not completed. According to a media statement issued by a spokesman for the event's organizers KAVO, the F1 complex is yet to be finalized, with the final touches to be made in the days to come.

Landscaping work to the surrounding area and parking lots still remains to be done. But we are finalizing last-minute touches and can be ready on schedule,” said the spokesman.

Worries about the finalization process for the Yeongam-based circuit have been surfacing in the media in recent days, after a photograph taken at the circuit on Monday showed a bridge over the start-finish straight still under construction, as reported by the GMM news agency.

Additionally, it seems that the circuit's main access road is apparently not yet sealed and the entire site not fully fenced. On top of that, shortly after the track was completed, it started raining, which further increased worries that the racing asphalt will not be able to recover in time for the first F1 action next Friday.

The only concern is the new asphalt,” Nico Rosberg was quoted by Welt newspaper, adding to the suspense of the asphalt situation in Korea.

Ready or not, the Yeongam track will indeed host the inaugural Korean Grand Prix two weekends from now. However, it seems that only next Friday we'll know for sure if action will unfold throughout the entire weekend or only for a couple of laps on Friday. The last time a GP was postponed due to disintegration of the racing asphalt was in 1985, during the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps.
