Home is where the heart is, and all that, but clichés mean nothing when you're on the road, cut off from civilization, with limited resources, and the home that should shelter and provide the basics for you sucks.
The Konig X-Trailer mobile home does a lot of things, but "sucks" isn't among them. That's because it was designed with multi-functionality, modularity, and durability in mind, so it's a versatile space that adapts to whatever needs you might have at any given moment.

Konig is a German company specializing mostly in utility trailers. For some years, though, they've been taking their experience in utility trailers and using it to develop more family-friendly solutions ranging from small towables to expandable trailers that can fit the entire clan. It'll be a snug fit, but a fit nonetheless.

The X-Trailer is the most recent addition to the Konig lineup and is a single-axle boxy towable that could be whatever you need it to be.

As its name hints, the X-Trailer is designed to go off-road, though perhaps strangely, the off-road package is offered optionally. It's the most rugged unit in the entire Konig lineup and is ideal for anything from hauling bikes and electric bicycles or water gear to carrying a small family to whatever vacation destination they have in mind – and in relative comfort, too.

The X-Trailer comes in two options for size, the KHC 36 20 X-Trailer, with a total length of 5.33 meters (17.5 feet), and the longer KHC 40 20 X-Trailer, with a length of 5.73 meters (18.8 feet). Depending on its future use, either model can be purchased in the basic spec, without windows on the walls, no skylight, and no furniture, as a complete package, or any combination possible between these two.

The X-Trailer starts at €15,000 (approximately $16,600 at the current exchange rate) for the basic spec and can reach double the amount if you opt for the full gamut of options, like in the trailer shown in the video available at the bottom of the page. For $30,000 ($33,150), you get a tiny home on wheels that can sleep as many as six people, with a compact but sufficient kitchen, a wet bathroom, and some storage space, including for your gear.

The X-Trailer is made of powder-coated galvanized steel and insulated so as to be comfortable for year-round use. The rear hatch with the window is part of the standard spec, as is the main access door on the side.

The hatch is for loading up bikes or bicycles, but it will also work wonders for opening up the interior space to whatever view you happen to be parked by. Konig promises that the space inside will also fit larger items like quads or jet skis, all of which will be secured during transport with the patented Konig rails.

Once you decide what you need this towable for, you get to customize each and every detail about it, from the size or the position of the windows to the furniture. Speaking of furniture, Konig will equip the trailer with the X-Concept modules that offer an impressive number of combinations and uses.

For example, four such modules used in the display unit in the video below serve as benches with integrated storage. But if you fold them out and then rearrange the cushions, you turn them into a two-person bed. The elevator bed above and the rooftop tent add four more berths and convert this compact, single-axle trailer into quite the family home. The elevator bed has a maximum payload of 250 kg (551 lbs) and comes with adjustable height.

The modules can also be rearranged, stacked, or even taken out and used as outdoor furniture. They can also be used in more traditional ways to create a dining area or a simple lounge. Again, the only limit is that set by the owner of the X-Trailer and whatever cargo they're hauling with it.

At the front of the trailer is the kitchen set-up, with a small sink with water containers underneath, outlets to plug an electric stove, a small Dometic electric fridge, and some cabinetry for storage. Next to the kitchen is the wet bathroom, a closet-like space with a shower and enough room to put in a toilet. And then right next to it is the wardrobe, offering hanging space and drawers.

There aren’t that many creature comforts to make the X-Trailer into a mobile home that could rival larger trailers, let alone towables like tiny houses, but you have to keep things in perspective. The X-Trailer is modular, allowing other uses than just that of an RV; you simply remove the furniture into storage, and you get yourself a cargo hauler.

The X-Trailer also wants to be more off-road-ready than a tiny house, with a higher ground clearance, beefier tires, and a lighter weight. For a towable that wants to accomplish so many things with only minor modifications, the X-Trailer is a standout – and worthy of consideration, at the very least.
