If you are the lucky owner of a power-window fitted vehicle, than you most surely were at one point the unlucky owner of some swollen fingers. There is just about no one we know who at one point did not get his/her hand caught in the speeding window as it mercilessly closed...
According to a study conducted by safety organization KidsAndCars, the number of people who get hurt by a power window is bigger, by millions, than the one found in the official National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) statistics.
This is why the organization will host a press conference on Monday, November 2, at the National Press Club in Washington. At the conference, they promise to reveal the findings of their studies, backed by testimonials of those who got injured and from parents "who's children were critically injured or killed by power windows."
The entire endeavor was taken in order to support the mandatory introduction of automatic reversing windows (ARS) on all vehicles. Such a system would allow the window to stop its movement and reverse in case it meets resistance.
"While current legislation mandates "pull-up to close" switches on all vehicles introduced after October 1, 2010, it does not address third-party accidents, which occurs when a driver operating the switch cannot see rear seat passengers," KidsAndCars said in a release announcing the
press conference.
"Also as distracted driving becomes an escalating problem, drivers who are distracted may suffer from longer response times, causing further injury to a passenger that may be trapped in a window or unable to speak."
We will come back on the story next Monday, to give you the findings of the study as they are presented.
