At the beginning of September, comedian Kevin Hart and two others were involved in a car crash that saw a reworked 1970 Plymouth Barracuda topple over, injuring the passengers. Although no one was seriously hurt, the incident sparked debates on how safe custom cars really are.
Recently, the crash report for the incident surfaced, courtesy of TMZ. Aside from listing all of the modifications Hart asked to be made, the report also sheds some light into how everything went down.
It was known right from the time of the crash that Hart left the scene for reasons unknown, and left the driver, Jared Black, and passenger Rebecca Broxterman trapped inside the car.
Apparently, Hart was riding shotgun in a car “not outfitted to carry rear-seat passengers," the report reads. It’s unclear where and how the woman was seated, but she ended up pinned between the passenger seat and the collapsed roof. None of the three were wearing seat belts and both men suffered minor back injuries.
According to TMZ, citing official sources, the crash is the driver’s fault. Apparently Black pressed the accelerator pedal a little too hard and ended up losing control of the car.
And that’s not hard to do, given the Barracuda’s 6.4-liter HEMI V8 pumps out 720 hp thanks to a Whipple supercharger .
It’s unclear at this point what the consequences for the driver will be, but we do know law enforcement agencies are now looking into ways to extend regulations to cover custom cars as well.
Kevin Hart, as most people in his line of work, loves cars. This particular Barracuda was purchased by the actor as a 40th birthday gift to himself. The car is now wrecked, both as a result of the crash and the intensive police work conducted to determine the cause of the accident.
