No further from last week, Aston Martin confirmed that JMW Motorsport have been chosen as the manufacturer's new development partners for its GT2 programme. No doubt about it, the team's great season in 2009, when they managed to finish runner-up in their class, was pretty important in Aston Martin's decision-making process.
Following the closing of the three-year partnership programme, the team headed by principal Jim McWhirter will start developing the new Vantage GT2 right away, meaning in the very first month of 2010. A testing programme has already been put in place by the team's officials in order for the car to be highly competitive for the season opener at Castellet, on April 11th.
In addition to benefiting from factory support from Aston Martin for the upcoming few years, JMW Motorsport also reached a deal with tire manufacturer Dunlop for a one-year extension to their initial partnership.
“This is a very exciting development for our team and reflects the efforts invested over the past seasons. This may be a new car for JMW, but the same desire, commitment and perseverance is still there and we are confident we shall be in the mix from the start. Dunlop have been an integral part of our success and it is extremely rewarding that they are joining forces with JMW and Aston Martin Racing in this challenging new adventure,” said McWhirter.
“We have focused considerable engineering resource on improving the performance of the Vantage GT2. While we offer cars in every class from LMP1 to GT4, the GT2 car is probably the most important customer car and the one where we can make the most improvements. Working with a top professional team like JMW with their resources and commitment will mean we will be able to really challenge for GT2 honours in 2010,” added George Howard-Chappell, Aston Martin Racing team principal.
