Jaguar XF to Get Four Cylinder Diesel Engine

The world of executive saloons has changed a lot in the last few years, as consumers not only turned to diesel engines but also started preferring the economical four cylinder units to the more refined six cylinder powerplants.

Automotive producers have responded promptly to this shift, including four pot oil burners in their offer, in order to get a bigger slice of the market share cake. And the strategy has paid out, as a huge part of the vehicles sold in this segment are powered by such engines.

One big exception to this is Jaguar, who only offers V6 diesel engines on the XF: a 2.7 liter 207 hp unit and a 3.0 liter 275 hp powerplant. According to Top Gear, things are about to change, as the big cat is working on this, in an effort to catch up with the competition.

This autumn, the Jaguar XF will get a revised version of the 2.2 liter twin turbocharged engine from the Land Rover Freelander LR2. The powerplant will receive a set of tweaks that will make it beefier and more refined in order to be suitable for the premium brand. It will use an automatic transmission featuring a start stop system that will allow it to emit under 150 grams of CO2 per km.

Installed on the SUV, the unit develops 160 hp at 4,000 rpm and 400 Nm of torque at 2,000 rpm, while emitting 194 grams of CO2/km. It returns a fuel consumption of 31.4 mpg for the combined cycle, 25.6 mpg in the city and 37.9 mpg on the highway.
