The brand new F-Type sportscar has, though the power of its design, proven itself to be a symbol of the British automotive industry. Everybody sees it as the 911 that it isn’t, and yet it’s a little known fact that from the very start, its business model was designed to emulate Porsche.
That’s not to say the F-Type is designed to be as fast and precise as a 911, only that its business model is inspired by the many versions and special editions that drive sales of Porsche’s very expensive model. So not surprisingly, just over a month after the unveiling of the new 911 Targa in Detroit, Jaguar is considering a trick roof as well.
Word comes straight from the wolf’s mouth: Jaguar Design Director Ian Callum. Speaking to Auto Express, he said the company is considering the idea, but has not yet made a decision.
“The issue with the Targa is volume. If you think of Porsche, 10 percent of its cars are Targa, 10 percent of ours is less than theirs,” Callum said.
To take on Porsche’s mechanically elegant roof design, the Brits will have to come up with something special. Even comparing the F-Type roadster and a 911 Convertible, it’s clear that they’re not quite there in terms of roof design. Better stick with the coupes guys!
