BMW has had a couple of controversial designs over the years. The most controversial was probably the Bangle Butt which made its appearance on the E65/66 7 Series. Chris Bangle resigned some time ago, but his legacy keeps on living through the new 3 Series GT.
Its design is definitely controversial but it's not new. It resembles the 5 Series GT in a "love it or hate it" way. We definitely love it, mainly because it makes the 3 Series more practical than before, allowing family loving people to enjoy the benefits of a 3er with their loved ones.

So the new Gran Turismo from BMW has the same tall back as the other GT already present in the BMW lineup. "This third body variant of the current model family unites the sporty-dynamic genes of the Sedan with the practicality and versatility of the Touring – attributes that are complemented by a palpable boost in space and ride comfort," according to BMW.

The size differences are noticeable. The new Turismo is longer by 200 mm than the Touring version, it has a 110 mm longer wheelbase and is taller by 81 mm.

These bigger measurements translate into a bigger boot capacity (500 liters) and more leg room for the passengers. Furthermore, the design differs from the standard 3 Series both at the front and at the back as we already said some time ago. The front now has a more prominent interpretation of the classical BMW double kidney grille while at the back, everything is changed because of the GT look. Another thing that we love is the fact that BMW decided this Turismo should have frameless windows for all 4 doors.

The engines of the F34 will vary depending on the region in which you are located. European customers will have 3 petrol engines at their choice: the 320i, 328i and 335i engines.

The 320i will have 184 HP and 270 Nm with a combined fuel consumption of 6.6 l/100 km (153 g/km CO2-Emission).

The 328i will boast 245 HP and 350 Nm from the same 2-liter 4-cylinder block as the 320i with a fuel efficiency of 6.7 l/100 km (156 g/km CO2-Emission).

Finally, the 335i will be based on the N55 engine and will have 306 HP and 400 Nm. The fuel consumption of this model will be around 8.1 l/100 km (188 g/km CO2-Emission).

There will also be 2 diesel engines available in Europe: the 318d and 320d, both based on the same 2-liter engine CR engine.

The 318d will have 143 HP with 320 Nm of torque and a fuel consumption of 4.5 l/100 km (119g/km CO2-Emission) whilst the 320d will boast 184 HP and 380 Nm of torque with a fuel consumption of 4.9 l/100 km (129 g/km CO2-Emission).

The transmission systems available in Europe will be the 6-speed manual gearbox as standard and a 8 speed automatic as an optional.

In the US, only the 328i and the 335i versions will be available. Also, the American models will be equipped only with the 8-speed automatic transmission. Four-wheel drive models are expected in all the regions later on.

For the European market, the F34 GT will be available starting this summer, whilst in the US markets, the new model will arrive somewhere around late 2013.
