Have you ever thought about buying an iPhone? If not, you should get one as soon as possible because their usability is continuously expanding to more and more areas, mostly thanks to the applications designed by developers from all over the world. The best example is given by greenMeter, an iPhone application which uses the iPhone internal accelerometer (that's right, Apple's device has an in-built accelerometer) to give you details about your driving style and help you reduce fuel consumption and costs.

First of all, the downloadable application needs to be configured with a few vehicle details, such as the weight of the car, the drag coefficient, the pitch angle and the engine efficiency. In addition, the driver has to enter details related to fuel cost per gallon, temperature and pressure. All you need to do next is to install the iPhone in your car, using a cradle or not, just make sure that it won't shift or change its position while the vehicle is in motion.

More importantly, the developers mentioned that in order to get the best information from the device, you have to “be sure that the iPhone is positioned like any other important gauge or instrument in the vehicle.”

“You can learn from greenMeter before you even get in the car. By tipping the device forward and backward to simulate acceleration, you can study the graphs in greenMeter to see the effects of acceleration, aerodynamic drag, and rolling resistance across the speed range. Then implement your knowledge on the road, by choosing an efficient cruising speed and using the built-in g meter to limit acceleration while you drive,” greenMeter's developers said in the description of the software.

The iPhone application can be purchased for no less than 6 bucks from the online iTunes App Store but, in case you want to see the software in action before purchasing it, have a look at the gallery published below the article.
