This has to be one of the silliest mistakes we’ve seen an automaker make in a long… long… time. Hyundai has recently announced the new Veloster Turbo will make its European debut at the Geneva Motor Show, being the first application of their new 1.6-liter T-GDI engine.
But while that might sound spine-tinglingly awesome, it’s really not. Hyundai says that instead of the full 201 hp the car gets in America, it will only have 183 hp (186 PS) in Geneva, as they wanted it to better fit European driving tastes.
To us, that sounds like going back a generation in terms of hot hatch performance. It’s like going from the Golf GTI to the MINI Cooper.
We’re sorry but this just doesn’t make sense, no matter what European customers want. The Veloster Turbo probably isn’t a volume model, more of a halo to show that Hyundai means business. And so more torque instead of headline-grabbing power isn’t worth it! And with a price that we expect to be over €3000 more than the regular Veloster, it’s not going to be such an attractive package.
autoevolution will be attending the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, so stay tuned for some real up close and personal shots of the vehicles, as well as for first-hand details of the motorized contraptions presented at the event.
