Hyundai Motor America's total sales increased 11 percent in 2023, with Hyundai selling a grand total of 801,195 vehicles in this part of the world. Its electric vehicles also proved rather popular, with the Ioniq 5 leading the charge (pun intended).
Be that as it may, a small number of Ioniq 5 crossovers have been hit with a safety recall over improperly heat-treated driveshafts. This condition further affects the Ioniq 6, which sold 12,999 units in 2023 as opposed to 33,918 examples of the Ioniq 5. According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the plusher GV60 from the Genesis brand is affected as well.

A grand total of 1,165 electric vehicles are recalled, split between 46 units of the Genesis, 913 units of the zero-emission sedan, and 206 units of the Ioniq 5. Said vehicles were produced for the 2023 model year from January 26, 2023 to March 25, 2023. The subject rear inner driveshaft bears the same part number (49560-GI000) for all three vehicles, with all three based on Hyundai's E-GMP architecture.

Supplied by South Korea-based Hyundai World Industrial Ace, the suspect driveshaft assembly is prone to fracturing under load, resulting in a loss of motive power. Hyundai WIA used out-of-spec tooling during the heat treatment process, therefore explaining the driveshaft's fracturing condition.

The supplier determined that the quenching oil supply hose was damaged, causing oil contamination on the induction coil used for heating the driveshaft. This, in turn, prevented the proper induction and heat treatment. Be that as it may, Hyundai Motor America isn't aware of any incidents in the US that are attributable to this concern.

The quenching oil supply hose was properly connected on January 20, 2023, and Hyundai WIA further implemented an additional end-of-line inspection test on November 3, 2023. Dealers will be informed about this recall no later than March 25, the day known owners will be notified by mail about the faulty driveshafts. In the meantime, it would be best to run the VIN on the NHTSA's website and inquire about parts availability with your nearest dealer in preparation for the service appointment.

Currently priced at $41,800 in the US market, the Ioniq 5 promises up to 303 miles (488 kilometers) of EPA-rated driving range and up to 320 horsepower for the dual-motor option. Not long now, the 2025 Hyundai Ioniq N will hit dealers with 641 ponies for 10 seconds at a time in N Grin Boost mode. The performance-oriented version also sports a rear wiper and washer, which could trickle down to lesser specifications of the electric crossover.

The Ioniq 6 is often described as being a competitor to the Model 3, which it most certainly is. A bit longer than Tesla's sedan, the Ioniq 6 starts at $42,450 and tops 361 miles (581 kilometers) on a full charge of the high-voltage battery. By comparison, the Model 3 Highland starts at $38,990 and offers 341 miles (548 kilometers) at most.

As opposed to the Electrified GV70, which is produced in Alabama, the GV60 comes from South Korea. A premium-oriented crossover with a decidedly posh interior, the 2024 model year Genesis GV60 costs $52,000 from the outset.
