South Korean manufacturer Hyundai announced this weekend it will initiate a recall for 139,500 Sonata models manufactured between December 2009 and September 2010. The models are being sent to dealerships because of steering column issues.
According to the recall notice posted on the official National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website, the problem involves the steering column intermediate shaft universal joint connection.
That connection may have been improperly assembled or insufficiently tightened. The result of such a fault may cause complete separation or compromised attachment of the connections. For the driver, this might mean a serious loss or reduction in steering capability.
As usual in such cases, repairing the problem will be performed at no extra charge for the owners. In this case, the fix will consist of inspecting the steering column and updating the power steering software. The recall is expected to begin next month, with owners to be notified starting this week.
This is the second problem identified in the Sonata this year, after a fault in the front-door latches caused the recall of some 1,300 cars and a temporary freeze in sales of the new model.
The new generation of the Sonata was presented at the New York International Auto Show earlier this year, having been introduced as a vehicle which matches the new Hyundai design language.
The car marks several Hyundai firsts, including he first Hyundai vehicle to have both GDI technology and a turbocharger. The premieres come with the new 2.0T engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC manual control.
