Hyundai Presents "Urban Nomad" iX-Onic Crossover Concept

The 2009 Geneva Auto Show will witness, alongside the new Equus, a new contraption spawned from Hyundai engineers' ideas. The "Urban Nomad" IX-Onic Crossover Concept will introduce at the aforementioned show a "whole new look for a compact 4x4 SUV", Hyundai says.

The crossover was designed in Russelheim, Germany, as a "urban nomad, a car of contrasts for a world of contrasts," said the people who drew it. It has an overall length of 4,400mm, is 1,850mm wide and measures 1,650mm in height.

The hexagonal grille type was first introduced on the 2006 Genus concept car and surfaced two years later on the i-mode concept. The headlamps feature LED daytime running lights (DRL) that move down whenever the ‘dipped beam’ is switched on. DRL are also fitted to the door mirror housings.

The rear window has been designed and produced by Hyundai its QarmaQ partner SABIC Innovative Plastics. Thank to the use of Lexan plastics instead of conventional glass, the rear window has a three-dimensional shape. The upper part of the window features a strongly concave shape to make it possible to integrate the roof spoiler in the rear window.

An X-shaped visual theme is repeated across numerous areas of the cabin drawn in embossed leather and light-alloy magnesium accents. The shape of the interior is outlined with "ice blue" seams that replicate the color of both the ribbed ice blue floor carpet and the exterior.

Under the hood lies a 1.6l GDi turbocharged, four-cylinder petrol engine, with Idle Stop and Go (ISG) technology that alows it to have a 149g/km CO2 emission rate, and a double-clutch six-speed transmission. The power is sent to the wheels by a four wheel drive system.
