When it comes to fuel cell technology, Hyundai is the first manufacturer to give hydrogen a chance in terms of mass production. But the Tucson FCEV, known as ix35 FCEV in Europe, is getting on a bit. It’s no wonder, then, that the time is high for the Seoul-based outfit to bring something new to the table.
Enter Hyundai’s Next Generation FCEV, which is a near-production fuel cell electric SUV wrapped as a concept. The first recipient of the automaker’s fourth-generation fuel cell technology has 20 percent more ponies than the Tucson FCEV/ix35 FCEV, priding itself on 163 PS or 161 brake horsepower.

Optimized to start even at -30 degrees Celsius (22 degrees Fahrenheit), the powertrain’s main bragging right is the 60 percent efficiency level, which is 9 percentage points better than the preceding fuel cell electric SUV. So to speak, Hyundai is targeting a driving range of 800 kilometers (497 miles) according to the testing procedures of the lab-based New European Driving Cycle, which is much better than the predecessor’s 600 km (373 m).

The yet-unnamed production model will be joined by 2020 by another fuel cell electric vehicle, 8 battery-powered EVs, 8 plug-in hybrids, and 10 hybrid vehicles. That’s right, ladies and gentlemen! In total, the Hyundai Motor Company intends to launch 28 eco-friendly vehicles by 2020's end.

According to Hyundai, the name of the fuel cell electric SUV and the advanced driver assistance technologies it will come equipped will be made public in January 2018 at the Consumer Electronics Show. In related news, the compact-sized Kona SUV will gain a battery-powered electric variant in the first half of 2018, which will boast a range of up to 390 km (242 m).

In 2021, luxury division Genesis Motors will launch its first-ever EV, while a Hyundai-branded long-range EV will join the fray with approximately 500 kilometers (373 miles) of driving range. “Hyundai Motor will take the lead in developing and producing green energy vehicles that would ultimately complement a near-zero emission society,” declared Lee Ki-sang, the senior vice president of Hyundai Motor Group’s Eco Technology Center.
