Modern day vehicles use advanced navigation systems which can be updated by simply inserting an USB stick into the car’s infotainment system that has the right software on it.
However, on an older car like the Lexus GX 450 the system is a bit different. It uses an optical unit like a computer which reads DVDs. So in order to update its software, you will first need to acquire such a DVD with the right update software version from your dealer. The process of updating the system is very easy though. Here’s what you need to do:
  • Open the front passenger side door and move the seat to its most forward position;
  • Open the rear right passenger door and look under the front seat for a black box. That is the optical unit for the navigation system;
  • Remove the plastic cover by snapping the two anchor points;
  • With the cover removed, search for a slide button on the left;
  • Slide it and then push the one next to it in order to eject the DVD inside, if there is one;
  • Insert the new DVD upgrade disk and put everything back. The system will do the rest.
