Heidfeld Still Hopeful of F1 Drive

Nick Heidfeld has accepted the fact that Michael Schumacher’s unexpected comeback diminished his own chances of driving in Formula 1 for 2010, but holds no grudge against his fellow countryman, on the contrary, the former BMW Sauber F1 driver said he is happy for Schumacher and thinks it will be a great thing for the sport of Formula One.

Despite being implicated in the sport for so long, Heidfeld admitted he was surely taken by surprise by some of the moves and changes that happened in the second half of 2009 within the F1 series.

The German pilot had high hopes in December 2009 for landing a seat with Mercedes GP if the negotiations between the team and seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher failed.

"Of course over the holidays my current job situation did not let go of me, even after Michael Schumacher's decision was published just before Christmas," he said. "This is certainly a great thing for Formula 1 and I wish good luck to Michael and Mercedes."

In a report by Autosport.com, Nick admitted his winter holidays mood was affected by the situation, but he is determined to maintain his F1 training and continue negotiations with other teams.

"This decision affects me directly because it means there is a relevant less space for next year. I am not naive when I say, especially after the past few weeks, a lot of unexpected things can happen in Formula 1."

The German F1 driver concluded he will look for an offer that best fits his own long-term plans in the sport. "Now we have to look forward and focus on the best long-term option for my future in Formula 1. I will continue to train hard, conduct talks with the appropriate people and to challenge my chance with all my might," he said.

"I hope in the coming weeks to be able to announce something concrete about my future plans."
