Heidfeld Changes Helmet Ahead of 2009 Season

We don't know if Nick Heidfeld will use a different racing approach throughout the upcoming season, but we do know that he will start his new F1 campaign with a brand new helmet. The German might not be the type of driver to be making the headlines in F1, but admitted he decided to change his helmet because he was searching for a more aggressive look in 2009.

Whether this will translate into a more aggressive drive in 2009, we shall wait and see. With all eyes on Kubica for the 2009 season, Heidfeld might surprise us all and wear his new bright-green helmet on his way to the podium more often.

“I took my inspiration from a snowboard helmet that I saw when I was on holiday. I wanted a somewhat more aggressive look. Green makes quite a change, as none of the other F1 drivers sports a green helmet at the moment,” said Heidfeld at the unveiling of the BMW Sauber F1.09 in Valencia.

Until now, the German driver used to wear a black, white and blue scheme on his helmet.

As for the new season, Heidfeld insisted the new changes brought to the car's aerodynamics plus the introduction of slick tires and Kinetic Energy Recovery System has made 2009 more unpredictable than ever.

“There is definitely more uncertainty but it is more exciting the chances are bigger, in both directions. Now you have to just improve on your own and of course everyone is optimistic in the beginning, and we hope that we can do it. In the last couple of years we did know very well how much quicker we should be because the regulation changes were small, this year it is much more difficult,” added Heidfeld.
