At least 884 Harley-Davidson motorcycles are expected back in the authorized dealerships across Canada, as the Milwaukee manufacturer issued the recall campaign number 2014122. The affected motorcycles belong to the all-new Breakout family.
Harley is bringing in both the base model of the Breakout and its much more expensive CVO (Custom Vehicle Operations), both with the same problem, a defective fuel level indicator system. 2013-2014 Harley-Davidson Softail Breakout and 2013-2014 Harley-Davidson CVO Softail Breakout model year machines may run out of fuel even though the level indicator is telling a completely different story.

Harley says that in certain cases, this might happen even before the Low Fuel warning lamp illuminates, potentially leaving the riders stranded in the middle of nowhere. It appears like the problem originates in the software of these bikes, and it was not a hardware failure that triggered it.

Since Harley-Davidson adds that the dealers will install a software update which recalibrates the fuel level indication system, we’d rather advise that Breakout and Breakout CVO customers should pay a visit to their nearest dealer and have their software upgraded even before they receive an e-mail or call from the MoCo.

A custom bike stranded in the desert with a dry tank is definitely not anyone’s idea of two-wheeled fun. As for the electronics part, am I the only one who feels like even these custom CVO beauties whose classic heritage H-D stresses so much may have too much electronics in them?
