The Singapore Grand Prix saw British driver Lewis Hamilton start the race in 1st place, after an excellent qualifying run. However, after maintaining his lead until lap 22, the gearbox of his MP4-27 began acting up, and he was finally forced to retire.
Hamilton was very disappointed for not finishing, as he considered he had the necessary pace to win. He said: "It's heartbreaking not to have finished the race today [. . .] We definitely had the pace to win this weekend. In fact, before I retired, I was cruising; just managing the gap back to Seb [. . .] Then I started to experience difficulty with the gearshift, then I lost third gear, and then the 'box kept dropping into neutral."

With the retirement, Hamilton drops to 52 points below Fernando Alonso, and with six more races to go, he really needs to deliver in each and every one of them, to stand a chance of being first, by the end of the season. He went on to say "As a result, I think we can really attack in the next few races. It's going to be hard to close the gap to guys like Fernando and Sebastian, especially when they keep finishing race after race, but I'll never give up [. . .] There are six more races, and I need to go and win all six. I'll fight until the end."
