Hamilton Says Piquet Could Return to F1

There are only a few voices backing Nelsinho Piquet after the crash-gate scandal that he triggered a couple of months ago. The Brazilian was granted immunity by the FIA in order to come clean about the whole affair and managed to walk out of it with no penalties whatsoever.

Nevertheless, his image was heavily affected in the series and almost all outside watchers of the F1 action agreed that no one would now risk having the 24-year old Brazilian in their lineups for the future. Piquet himself admitted that, until the waves will calm down in the series, he's better off looking for a job in the US (probably in the Indy Car Series).

However, one positive thought came from Piquet's former title rival Lewis Hamilton, with whom the Brazilian battled for the GP2 championship until the very last round back in 2006. He then lost to the young Brit by a few points. Knowing how competitive Piquet can be, Ham admitted he wouldn't be surprised to see his former rival return to the Great Circle in the near future. And it's not like he wouldn't deserve it, argued the McLaren ace.

He's a good driver and he's had a great career, so who knows. For sure, there are opportunities for him in the future and I can only wish him the best. (...) he's still very young, he's experienced and he'll take it in his stride,” said Hamilton during a Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Phone-In this morning, as reported by the British magazine Autosport.

Piquet recently revealed, via his Twitter feed, that he feels sorry for being involved in this entire race-fixing scandal and expects to start from scratch all over again in terms of his racing career. In order to do that, he'll resume talk to some teams in the US to secure a seat for next year, after which he'll again try his luck in F1.

If I can't find a place in F1, perhaps for one year I will go to America and try to do a good job there until the waves have calmed down a bit. I was there in August for a week and spoke with some teams,” revealed the Brazilian.
