Hamilton's Mind Games Won't Work on Vettel - Herbert

Lewis Hamilton has been one of the most vocal drivers in the Formula 1 paddock lately, with comments made in reference to rivals Red Bull, Sebastian Vettel and even Fernando Alonso (although this time he has been nothing but full of praises in regards to his former teammate at McLaren).

Talking about Red Bull, the 2008 F1 champion told the media that the Austrians are nothing but an energy drinks company that can never compare themselves to historic F1 teams such as McLaren and Ferrari, while he rated Sebastian Vettel as a poor man's Nigel Mansell. Whether he actually believes it or not, it's not for us to judge, but according to former Grand Prix driver and current F1 steward Johnny Herbert, these are only mind games played by Ham in an attempt to destabilize the strong Red Bull team.

I think there are some games,” said Herbert, in a recent interview with 422race.com. “I also read Lewis saying that Red Bull has to get the KERS system on the car if they want to be competitive. It is just little games that are being played to try and disrupt Sebastian and Red Bull. It's the normal thing in F1 to have these words sometimes.”

However, the British commentator believes Hamilton's strategy will not show any gains this year, as he reckons Vettel, as well as Red Bull, are a much stronger combo in 2011.

I like Lewis, his style, sometimes he makes probably a few mistakes too many, but he's learned from that. It's just part of the game, but Sebastian is not that type, he just does the job he needs to do.

For me, personally, the way he has developed from winning the championship last year is that this year he's more complete. He's very confident, he has so much belief in himself but also in the team, which gives him the right feeling.”

I'm sure Lewis has the same feeling at McLaren. The Red Bull is the fastest car at the moment, for sure, but I think Sebastian has more in his pocket, there is still more speed from him.”
