Hamilton, Button Praise Silverstone New Deal

The last two Formula One champions praised Bernie Ecclestone and the Silvesrtone owners British Racing Drivers Club (BRDC) for coming to an agreement regarding the future of the British Grand Prix. Silverstone yesterday announced that they have signed a 17-year deal with Ecclestone for the hosting of the aforementioned race, ending speculation about the future of the event in the series.

Lewis Hamilton, winner of the British Grand Prix in 2008 in dominant fashion, was enthused with the news and emphasized the importance of having the British Grand Prix as a sine-qua-non element of F1 racing. In addition, staying at Silverstone is seen by the McLaren driver as a plus for both the drivers and the British fans of the series.

Firstly, it's fantastic news that the British Grand Prix will stay on the calendar for 2010. Secondly, it's great that the race will be at Silverstone. The place has an atmosphere that money can't buy, and I have some fantastic memories of the track,” said Hamilton, according to Autosport.

Most importantly, those achievements have all been underlined by the reaction and support of the Silverstone crowd, which has always been fantastic. British fans are the greatest Formula 1 supporters in the world – and this must be the best Christmas present they could ever ask for,” added the British ace.

Jenson Button, who came to Silverstone this past season with the sole thought of winning his first British GP in career and stretch his winning streak in the 2009 championship, also admitted his enthusiasm over the news. He will now have some second, third and fourth chances of winning the British GP with his new team McLaren Mercedes.

Silverstone is one of the great circuits. There are three really that stand out, and that's Spa, Suzuka and Silverstone. They are very fast, flowing, it's not an easy circuit to overtake but it's a lot of fun to drive and it's the perfect way to see a Formula 1 car on the limit,” Button told the BBC.

It's a spectacular circuit and there's a lot of history at Silverstone as well. I just can't wait to get back there because the British fans are so supportive. I'm very, very happy,” added the 2009 F1 champion.
