Hamilton Blames the Media for Poor F1 Image

Although he has returned to winning in the Formula One championship, McLaren's Lewis Hamilton admits the British fans have switched their preferences for the 2009 season to countryman Jenson Button. And the reigning F1 champion doesn't seem to be bothered about it, as he reckoned people in general like winners. And that's what Button was all about this year, especially until the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

It doesn't bother me,” replied Hamilton, when asked by the British newspaper The Daily Mail if he feels bothered by the fans' sudden change of interest. “It's the way the world works. People love winners. Some people love to support the team that's winning, like in football,” added the 24-year old Brit.

In addition, he also clarified the over-and-over-again topic of him being arrogant and playboy within the Formula One paddock. While reckoning that this year's scandal with the lying to the Australian Grand Prix stewards didn't do him any good, he insisted he is a man like every other out there, prone to making mistakes and learning from them.

Also, he hinted that it was mainly the media that turned him into the over-spoiled rich driver that people think he is, via the multitude of untrue reports that make the headlines every day.

All I can say is, no one's perfect. I am a human being. Every sportsman, every film actor, every great person that's doing well and achieving something, it's like, hype, hype, hype, and as soon as they make one slip-up, it's 'Wow'. It's one slip-up.”

The thing is that it's what they (the fans) read that makes them think that (I'm arrogant). It's like people say I've got a boat - I've never thought of buying a boat. I've rented a boat. I don't spend money. I don't waste money. I have, on occasions, taken my girlfriend on a trip somewhere, and I can afford a better trip than some other people, but I don't live an extravagant lifestyle,” added the Brit.
