Jon Olsson in an alpine ski racer, so we didn’t expect anything else from him but taking Gumball seriously and trying to get to every checkpoint first. Jon recently posted an update on his blog, letting us know that he leads the board so far.
Here’s his record of checkpoints and stops until now: 4th-2nd-1st-1st-1st-1st-1st-1st. Our first reaction when we read this was to say that such an attitude defies the “all about having fun” spirit of the Gumball, but we though better and we’re actually pretty happy that Jon is using this approach.

Why? It’s simple. While being crazy and keeping yourself as well as all the others around entertained is an art and stands as the foundation of the Gumball, the rally also needs people that stay focus and perform, for the sake of diversity, so Bravo Olsson!

Let’s hear some tips from Jon:

“The tricky part on Gumball is that you can leave when ever you want, so we are trying to wait for a few guys to leave to not be the very first ones, but once they leave we set of as well and try to get the the destinations before them. We usually pass a bunch of guys when they are on the side of the road with police. The key to Gumball is really more about navigation, focus and strategy than high speed!”

The 2012 Gumball Rally is taking participants on the following route: New York City (start, May 25th); Toronto, Canada (May 25th); Indianapolis (May 26th-27th); Kansas City (May 28th); Santa Fe (May 29th); Las Vegas (May 30th); Los Angeles (finish, May 31st).
