GTA Creators Sue BBC over the Network’s Upcoming Drama “Game Changer”

When we first heard the UK’s national broadcasting network is planning to make a Grand Theft Auto movie, our enthusiasm was quite significant. Then we heard they are considering Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe for the lead role, which meant there’s something fishy.

After digging a little, we found the movie is not what most of us expected, as it’s rather a true-life account of a fight between the creator of the famous game and a Miami lawyer who wanted to ban video game violence. Now it seems that the plot may change into something even more different than what the series are all about.

The word is that Rockstar Games, via its parent company Take-Two Interactive, has filed a lawsuit against the BBC in London yesterday for trademark infringement about the broadcaster’s upcoming movie. As we previously mentioned, Daniel Radcliffe will play Sam Houser, the co-founder and president of Rockstar Games, the company that created one of the most popular games on the market.

Yes, but why did they sue the BBC?

Well, it’s not because they disagree with the film itself, they just want to make sure the British network is not using any of the game’s trademarks. “While holders of the trademarks referenced in the film title and its promotion, Rockstar Games has had no involvement with this project. Our goal is to ensure that our trademarks are not misused in the BBC’s pursuit of an unofficial depiction of purported events related to Rockstar Games,” GTA’s creators said in a statement issued to IGN.

Apparently the lawsuit comes after they have “attempted multiple times to resolve this matter with the BBC without meaningful resolution.” To be honest, we can’t see why they struggle to make a GTA movie without all the car chasing/stealing, shooting and blowing up in the first place, but that’s just us.
