The Toyota Prius, the car that started the hybrid age, went on sale in December 1997 in Japan, being privately imported to the United States after that, until it started to officially hit the dealerships there.
Looking at the actual Prius range now, you can clearly see how much the vehicle changed over time, especially from the fact that it’s gone from the compact sedan style to the unmistakable ‘Liftback’ shape.
Green Car Reports took a 2001 first generation Prius for a test recently in order to see how it feels after all these years and to tell if it is good or not to buy one. Of course, it’s not the most good-looking piece of machinery, but if you want a cheap hybrid vehicle that can haul your family, it sure is on the list.
