Gordon Murray Design Unveils T.27 Electric Car

What is considered to be the world’s most efficient electric car by its creators made its official public debut today at an event held at the RAC, Pall Mall, London. Gordon Murray Design unveiled their latest ultra compact city vehicle, dubbed T.27.

Designed to be used in the urban city environment, the T.27 is the result of the iStream production process, aiming at reducing lifecycle impacts and enable low cost, efficient manufacture within the UK.

The iStream technology has reportedly produced new levels of lightweight structure and safety in city cars.  The iFrame geometry in the T.27 has allowed every aspect of the vehicle to be optimized including Zytek Automotive’s integrated powertrain, another world first.

The T.27 has already sustained a second crash test which confirmed its structural integrity during a side impact, by taking part of the EuroNCAP 50km/h mobile deformable barrier (MDB) protocol.

The car is 25 kW electric motor that enables it to accelerate from naught to sixty in less than 15 seconds, and keep on going to a top speed of 105 km/h. Driving range is estimated at 100 miles on NEDC and 130 miles on ECE15.

According to Gordon Murray Designs, the T.27 has much lower energy consumption: the Smart EV uses 29% more energy per km, the Mitsubishi iMiEV uses 36% more energy per km, and the Mini-E uses 86% more energy per km.

“Lightweight is the most powerful tool we have in our armory in the fight against emissions and fuel consumption.  This is true of all cars and especially so with electric vehicles! A lightweight car means a lightweight battery increasing the levels of safety and reducing the retail price dramatically,” stated Professor Gordon Murray, CEO of Gordon Murray Design, at the unveiling of the T.27.

The T.27 will make its public road debut at the RAC Future Car Challenge on November 5, 2011.
