Google’s Latest Waze Update for CarPlay Is Both Good and Bad News

Google is hard at work on improving its navigation apps these days, and after rolling out several stable and beta updates for Google Maps and Waze on Android, it’s now the turn of the iPhone and CarPlay to get new releases.

The Waze app for iPhone and CarPlay has just received a new update to version 4.62, and the changelog brings both good and bad news.

First and foremost, the new Waze app fixes one of the bugs that have been around for several months already and causing the car icon to no longer rotate correctly when making a turn.

In other words, if you used Waze for navigation, you probably noticed that the car icon sometimes “forgets” to rotate, making the whole thing look weird, like you were driving sideways. This issue has fortunately been resolved in this new update, so make sure you install version 4.62 if you previously encountered this problem.

The bad news is the feature that everybody is looking for is still nowhere to be seen. Yes, it’s the CarPlay dashboard support, the feature that so many people are drooling over, only that Google itself doesn’t really seem to be in a rush to bring it to our devices.

Dashboard support for third-party navigation apps, which essentially allows Google Maps and Waze to replace Apple Maps in the map card on CarPlay, was released as part of iOS 13.4. That said, in order for the likes of Google Maps and Waze to use this feature, developers first need to update their apps to support it.

Up to this point, neither Google Maps nor Waze received support for the CarPlay dashboard, despite iOS 13.4 shipping nearly a month ago. It remains to be seen when this feature lands in Google’s navigation apps, but you really shouldn’t hold your breath for it.
