If your phone’s language is set to Italian or French, and Google Assistant keeps reading your text messages on Android Auto in English, you’re not alone.
There are maybe thousands of people out there struggling with the same problem, and the worst thing is the issue was first discovered in mid-2019.

So it’s been around for at least a year and a half, during which Google has provided only very limited information about what’s going on and how to deal with the whole thing.

Basically, it’s all a Google Assistant problem that causes text messages to be read in another language, ignoring the settings on your mobile device.

In a statement published in the first days of 2021, a member of the Android Auto team says the whole thing has been mostly fixed, only that some users might still be impacted.

This issue has been stretched more than our expectations. We appreciate your patience for continuing with Android Auto despite this ongoing issue. Our engineering team has worked really hard in trying to resolve this issue. As per the updates, this issue has been fixed for most of the locales/languages. We request you to share the feedback and let us know if the issue still persists,” the post reads.

We are continuously working on fixing the issue for the remaining locales. We will keep you posted with the available updates.

In the meantime, if your text messages are still being read in a different language, you could try to fix the whole thing on your own by opening the Google app on your Android device and going to the Three dot menu > More > Settings > Voice > Languages.

In this menu, you need to set the primary language preference and remove additional entries, such as English, to prevent Google Assistant from using them to read the incoming text messages when Android Auto is running on the screen.
